The Inman LINE was a British shipping company with seat in Liverpool, which maintained a regular airline service later to Philadelphia and to New York.
1850 were created those Liverpool & Philadelphia Steam Ship company by the businessman William Inman, in order to maintain a regular airline service from Liverpool to Philadelphia. Inman proved courage to begin from beginning excluding iron screw steamers a ship type, which began to only work straight in the transatlantic traffic. The shipping company did not get national subsidies, but it succeeded to Inman to break in into the monopoly of the emigrant transport of the Packetsegler which provided for good getting along. Inman was first, that tween deck passengers with steam ships to North America carried. The ships were to be recognized easily by the fact that all names began with the prefix "town center OF" ."; besides they had a Klippersteven, with which they worked nearly like sailing boats.
The business ran well. The emigrant stream constantly increased, the screw steamers used 50 per cent of less coal than the wheel steamers and was very economical. 1854 had to bear the shipping company of two heavy losses. The town center OF Glasgow (the first ship of the line) was in the Atlantic verschollen, and the newly built steamer town center OF Philadelphia had sunk on its young remote travel with Cape Race. But Inman did not give, instead of Philadelphia became 1857 New York up new terminal port, and the shipping company was called now Liverpool, New York & Philadelphia Steamship company. Inman had the chance for higher profits to this step probably moved, but an intensified competition threatened at the same time.
1869 conquered the town center OF Brussels for the first time for Inman the blue volume with more than 14 knots, Cunards wheel steamer were struck. 1870 arose new competition as a result of the fast ships of the White star LINE. The shipping company was however into financial difficulties guessed/advised and had to be converted 1875 into a corporation. The shipping company again changed its names, in Inman Steamship Company Ltd. In the same year the town center OF Berlin conquered the blue volume back, lost it however shortly thereafter the White star LINE. 1879 intervened the Guion LINE with the Arizona in the competition, with which itself the competition far zuspitzte.
1881 countered Inman at that time with the town center OF Rome, with 8415 BRT the largest ship of the world and with its three chimneys an impressive feature. Their speed was however disappointing: Instead of 18 it ran straight times 16 knots, too slowly around the Guion LINE the blue volume abzujagen. Briefly after their launching of a vessel Inman died. The descent of the Inman LINE was not to be stopped no more, 1883 the town center OF Brussels after a collision had sunk and the remaining fleet had urgently to be renewed. For the passage one needed two days longer than the competition. But it was missing at money, at a book value the fleet of 168500 Pound of Sterling had one commitments at a value of 265500 Pound. The Inman LINE showed, how deadly a malfunctioning blue volume racer in this inexorable competition could work.
1886 went the Inman LINE into the freiwillige liquidation, in order to make a reestablishment possible. The Inman & internationally Steamship CO. Ltd. had developed. Owner was international the US shipping company navigation company with seat in Philadelphia. The fleet was modernized, and with threw J. & G. Thomson in Glasgow gave one two new buildings in order. They placed all dagewesene into the shade. 1888 ran the sister ships town center OF Paris and town center OF New York from the pile, with 10499 BRT was them the largest passenger liners built up to then. The town center OF Paris conquered then also the blue volume of Cunards Etruria and Umbria for Inman back. The White star countered 1889 with Teutonic and Majestic, lost it however Inmans town center OF New York.
1892 decided congress of US by special law that the Inman ships in the USA could be purchased. The Inman LINE was dissolved 1893 and its former ships for the American LINE, a shipping company that internationally navigation company, was registered. "Town center the OF ......" was painted from the names of the ships. Thus a name, which had coined/shaped the picture of the transatlantic service crucially with, had always disappeared.
