In report systems characteristic numbers are generally divided in two types: River sizes and inventory sizes.

Inventory sizes are not period-referred, but are not reported time-referred ("“deadline"”) (data over one period are given also one time, "“time-referred"” to that extent also), e.g. the number of coworkers or a stock. With these sizes an aggregation is not meaningful over the time. With inventory sizes like "„piece in the camp "“it is not meaningful to sum the available number of piece in the camp during different periods however during the period the average to form minimum or maximum.
