The Iskra (Russian - the spark) was an early revolutionary newspaper of the social-democratic labour party of Russia (SDAPR), which appeared three years long since 1900/01 under leadership of Lenin. Their goal was the collection of the different currents of the workers' movement in Russia and education common "“consciousness"” - of a platform.

History

In December 1900 the first expenditure of the Iskra was printed as organ of the SDAPR. It did not appear however, as by some sources indicated, on 24 December 1900, although it was posed in the sentence and paging. The pressure retarded, and the first number of the newspaper came out only in January 1901. Lenin had come, from Munich to Leipzig, the final editorship of the Iskra had made; the first number of the sheet could appear.

The way there however was not simple. Lenin succeeded to print the newspaper in Germany while Georgi Plechanow had favored Switzerland as production place. German Social Democrats helped Lenin, procured to it accomodation and made possible for it to find in Probstheida printering in which the newspaper in cyrillic type characters could be set secretly. They supported also the illegal transport of the newspaper over the GermanRussian border.

The editorial "“the most urgent tasks of our movement"” came from W.I. Lenin. The Iskra created by Lenin was not "“any worker newspaper, but sat down to the goal of collecting the bewusstesten parts of the Russian workers' movement approximately around a Marxist program"”.

From 1901 to July 1903 altogether 44 expenditures of the Iskra appeared. The well-known writing of Lenin which () (1902) contentwise also the line of the newspaper summarizes.

After the second Party Congress of the SDAPR 1903, on the Lenin to the party leader, seized the editors of the Iskra - above all Plechanow - a party for the Minderheitsgruppe of the party, the Menschewiki was selected. Lenin stepped thereupon from the editorship out and became the decided opponent of the newspaper.
