ISO 9241 is an international standard, which describes guidelines of the interaction between humans and computer. The standard row carries the title "“ergonomic requirements for office activities with television sets"”. The DIN EN ISO 9241 reflects every three effect levels again, which a standard can have: national, European, world-wide. On the basis of a standard of the international standardization organizations ISO a European standard was compiled, which was taken over as DIN standard. A goal of the guideline is it to avoid and for the user the execution of its tasks facilitate health damage when working on the screen. The DIN EN ISO 9241 applies after your genuine speaking also as standard for the evaluation of the demand after user friendliness from the screen handling regulation (BildscharbV). The standard series describes requirements at the working environment, hardware and software.

Parts of the standard series

The standard series DIN EN ISO 9241 consists at present of altogether 17 parts:

  • Part 4: Requirements at keyboards
  • Part 5: Requirements at the work place layout and body attitude

  • Part 8: Requirements at color representations
  • Part 9: Requirements of input devices - except keyboards
  • Part 10: Principles of the design of dialogue
  • Part 11: Requirements of the adequacy - guiding principles
  • Part 12: Information representation
  • Part 13: Prompting
  • Part 14: Dialogue control by means of menus
  • Part 15: Dialogue control by means of command languages
  • Part 16: Dialogue control by means of direct manipulation
  • Part 17: Dialogue control by means of diplay forms

The parts of 5 and 6 cover the range of topics working environment. The parts of 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9 concern themselves with requirements at hardware, while the parts treat 10-17 aspects of the software ergonomics. Particularly in the parts of DIN EN ISO 9241-10 "“principles of the design of dialogue"” and ISO 9241-11 "“requirements of the adequacy"” are some criteria for the ergonomic organization of interactive systems.

DIN EN ISO 9241-10 principles of the design of dialogue

User surfaces of interactive systems, like web pages or software, should be easy to serve from the user. The part of 10 of the DIN EN ISO 9241 describes the following principles for the organization and evaluation of an interface between users and system (design of dialogue):

  • Suitability of task
  • Self description ability
  • Controllability
  • Expectation conformity
  • Error tolerance
  • Individualizing barness
  • Learning favorableness

DIN EN ISO 9241-11 requirements of the adequacy

The adequacy of a software depends on their use context. In the part of 11 the ISO 9241 is determined three guidance criteria for the adequacy of a software:

  • Effectiveness for the solution of a task,
  • Efficiency of the handling of the system,
  • Satisfaction of the users of a software.
