Sir James Young Simpson (* 7. June 1811 in Bathgate, Linlithgow, Scotland; " 6. May 1870 in Edinburgh) was a Scottish physician.
He was a professor for birth assistance at the university of Edinburgh and examined the possibilities of anaesthetics.
In the year 1847 it introduced the chloroform to Narkosezwecken. In the year 1853 Queen Victoria was with the birth of its ninth child successfully with chloroform. Simpson was raised 1866 into the conditions of a baron.
Around 1900 one found out only that chloroform can cause also liver damage, but the medical progress remains undisputed.
From Simpson many scientific work over Akupressur, birth assistance, anaesthetics, hospitalism and woman diseases comes.
When Simpson died, its funeral was a public event. Today a bronze statue in the park west Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh reminds of it.
