Johann Christian August Clarus (* 5 November 1774 in Coburg; 13. July 1854 in Leipzig) was a physician and became by his appraisals over "„the responsibility "“Johann Christian Woyzecks, whose reading energized George to its drama Woyzeck, admits.

Personal record

After private instruction with its father and the attendance of the Coburger of High School Clarus took up 1795 the study of the medicine to Leipzig. After a achtsemestrigem study it attained a doctorate 1799 to the doctor of philosophy and closed 1801 with the thesis "„to Momenta quaedam historica de methodicae scholae principibus "“, those of his uncle, who Leipziger at that time medicine professor Ernst Benjamin was cared for and examined God-dear elevation controversy, the graduation in medicine on.

As Clarus was appointed 1804 as the extraordinary professor of anatomy and surgery and entrusted at the same time with the office of the pro sector. 1811 he took over a tidy Professur as well as the Leipziger Stadtphysikat - today comparable with the director/conductor of public health authorities - and led in this function the war military hospitals after the people battle. For the care at Russian wounded one decorated one, carried out thereby, it 1814 with the knight cross of the Vladimir medal 4. Class, which 1818 the Saxonian earnings/service medal and the title of a royal-Saxonian yard advice followed.

In the following years it published its two larger scientific work ("„the cramp, in pathological and therapeutic regard systematically describes "“, volume 1. - Leipzig 1822; "„Contributions to recognize-eat and Beurtheilung of doubtful soul conditions "“, Leipzig 1828).

In May 1830 one transferred Clarus the presidency of the clinical institute into Leipzig. In the years 1836/37 it reached the summit and point of conclusion of its career as a rector of the University of Leipzig. Only 1848, with 74 years, he withdrew from his public offices. Clarus died on 13 July 1854 in Leipzig.

The appraisals

Clarus admits of Woyzeck beyond the borders of Leipzig by the appraisal over "„the responsibility of the murderer J.C., after principles the state medicine customer was act-moderately proven "“. Thus reads the title of the second appraisal, which it wrote for the process against the Johann Christian Woyzeck. The appraisals one published several times. The author submitted it before Woyzecks execution in a "“special edition"” to the Leipziger public. The execution took place then on 27 August 1824 on the market place in Leipzig.

Woyzeck had the widow Christiane Woost on 21 June 1821 erstochen. The process against it pulled itself over three years. The first appraisal had refunded Clarus on 16 September 1821. Therein after five discussions the responsibility was certified to the accused. The court condemned Woyzeck to death, all requests for grace of it were rejected. Months later, briefly before Woyzecks execution date, an eye-witness confirmed to its confusion, whereupon a second, substantially more extensive appraisal was provided by Clarus. Therein the consultant confirms responsibility again to Woyzecks. (The wording of this appraisal documented in Wikisource - easily shortened -.)

In the preface of the second appraisal Clarus expresses itself over the reasons, which led its opinion after Woyzeck to the act. It writes, which condemned is by a wild, thoughtless and life of a stage of the moral Verwilderung on the other hand down-sunk and had then in finstern the riot of raw passions, a human life destroyed. A deterring effect particularly on the growing up youth expects Clarus with that sights of the bleeding criminal, or with whom thoughts to it and he wishes that deeply it remembers the truth (likes) that work shyness, play, drunkennessness, satisfaction of the sex desire, and bad society, ungeahnet and gradually to crimes and to blood stands to lead to be able.

After against the statements of the appraisal colleagues of Clarus had polemisiert, the interest in it was far common. Finally it appeared 1825 in "“Henkes magazine for the state medicine customer"” and became thereby a larger specialized public admits. One of the subscribers was the physician Ernst Karl the father of George

Judgements over the Clarus appraisals

  • "“The state medicine customer and the straight psychiatry assembling as science subordinate themselves in the case Woyzeck of the dominant "” - is called it on the Internet side of the Saxonian psychiatry museum (s.Weblink)
  • Would "“what be applicable as diagnosis (with By far at the most probable (after today's nomenclature)"” Paranoia "“. Above all the training of an illusion system and the pursuit illusion are indications of large weight. (...) Crucial is whether we attain a justified judgement, certainty or a predominant probability nevertheless in the question: Did a Psychose lie forwards or In this question we, after my conviction, achieve firm reason: On 27 August 1824 on the market place of Leipzig psychologically a seriously ill person was cut back.
