After private instruction with its father and the attendance of the Coburger of High School Clarus took up 1795 the study of the medicine to Leipzig. After a achtsemestrigem study it attained a doctorate 1799 to the doctor of philosophy and closed 1801 with the thesis "to Momenta quaedam historica de methodicae scholae principibus ", those of his uncle, who Leipziger at that time medicine professor Ernst Benjamin was cared for and examined God-dear elevation controversy, the graduation in medicine on.

Clarus admits of Woyzeck beyond the borders of Leipzig by the appraisal over "the responsibility of the murderer J.C., after principles the state medicine customer was act-moderately proven ". Thus reads the title of the second appraisal, which it wrote for the process against the Johann Christian Woyzeck. The appraisals one published several times. The author submitted it before Woyzecks execution in a "special edition" to the Leipziger public. The execution took place then on 27 August 1824 on the market place in Leipzig.
Woyzeck had the widow Christiane Woost on 21 June 1821 erstochen. The process against it pulled itself over three years. The first appraisal had refunded Clarus on 16 September 1821. Therein after five discussions the responsibility was certified to the accused. The court condemned Woyzeck to death, all requests for grace of it were rejected. Months later, briefly before Woyzecks execution date, an eye-witness confirmed to its confusion, whereupon a second, substantially more extensive appraisal was provided by Clarus. Therein the consultant confirms responsibility again to Woyzecks. (The wording of this appraisal documented in Wikisource - easily shortened -.)
In the preface of the second appraisal Clarus expresses itself over the reasons, which led its opinion after Woyzeck to the act. A deterring effect particularly on the growing up youth expects Clarus with that sights of the bleeding criminal, or with whom thoughts to it and he wishes that deeply it remembers the truth (likes) that work shyness, play, drunkennessness, satisfaction of the sex desire, and bad society, ungeahnet and gradually to crimes and to blood stands to lead to be able.
After against the statements of the appraisal colleagues of Clarus had polemisiert, the interest in it was far common. Finally it appeared 1825 in "Henkes magazine for the state medicine customer" and became thereby a larger specialized public admits.
