Life and work

Johannes Sambucus originated from Tyrnau (Nagyszombat, at that time Hungary, today Trnava, Slowaki republic), there born in July 1531.

It completed first starting from 1542 in Vienna, Leipzig, Wittenberg, Ingolstadt, Strasbourg as well as into of Paris a study of the philology (old languages, law, history and philosophy). In particular it affected by the works Platos. it reached 1551 at the university into of Paris the Magister conclusion in philosophy. From 1558 to 1564 journeys led it to Venice, Padua, Genova, Neapel, Milan, Gent and Antwerp. At the University of Padua it turned, attained themselves 1555 the medicine Lizenziat to the study of the medicine and established themselves on it 1560 as a physician in Vienna, which had become at that time a center also the Hungarian scientific and cultural life.

With its Italy stay Sambucus had become acquainted with an art form liked at that time, "„the Emblemata "“. There it poet, connoisseur of the antique ones and latin-well-informed was, was offered to it an ideal platform of mental and artistic manipulation here. 1564 appeared the first edition of its "„Emblemata "“, within short time followed 5 further, which made suddenly it internationally famous as masters of this literature form. He was a first Hungarian author, whose works were translated into the French and soon also into English.

Sambucus arranged the publication of the first edition of the corpus in Vienna 1581 also iuris Hungarici. With in it the contained, on right rules of the antique ones based, principles he contributed one of the bases of the Hungarian juridical system.

Soon Sambucus was promoted to the yard physician emperor Maximilians II., as well as to the imperial advice and Hofhistoriograf. From its considerable fortune attained thereby it put on itself in the consequence the then largest private library of the world. The library contained numerous up to then unknown antique and contemporary Greek and latin handwriting (under the contemporary e.g. Janus Pannonius and Antonio Bonfini), whose texts it partially edited or made by generous the pressure possible. Many praise speeches in prefaces of the pressures developed in such a way tell of it. In addition it published different maps and geographical Beschreibunge, e.g. "„Hungaria "“, "„Transilvaniae Descriptio "“and "„Illirium "“and wrote latin of poems. Beyond that it possessed a large and art collection.

Sambucus led a letter correspondence with numerous personalities of the human world of thought of its time. From it further numerous translations and comments come to works of Roman and Greek authors of the antique ones, as well as papers for the history of Hungary.

Johannes Sambucus died on 13 June 1584 in Vienna. In the singing first race in the 1. District, house No. 3, is appropriate a Gedenktafel.

The collection of Sambucus formed the basic stick for the handwriting collection of the Austrian national library.
