JWT (until February 2005 J. Walter Thompson) is an international advertising agency with head office in New York. It was created 1864 by James walter Thompson and is according to own data the oldest advertising agency of the world.

The enterprise operates a world-wide agency net with 8000 coworkers in 311 offices in 155 cities and 90 countries.

Firm history

J. Walter Thompson is called internally gladly "„the Commodore "“, because it was inspired Segler.

1864, in the middle in the American civil war, began to sell William James Carl clay/tone in New York advertising space in religious magazines. The business ran well, and soon it could adjust the young James walter Thompson as coworkers for record keeping. Thompson persuaded Carl clay/tone to expand the business on other publications.

1877 sold the company for 500 $ to Carl clay/tone at its employee Thompson.

1878 gave Thompson to the company its own name. In an anecdote it means in addition: Actually it wanted to call the agency James W. Thompson. When it stated however that in New York already a whole set of gentlemen with this name transacted business, it changed the way of writing in "„J. Walter Thompson "“.

In the following 38 years James walter created the first international agency chain and a set of standard works over advertisement and marks.

1933 were created "„J. Walter Thompson "“in Berlin and short circuited before outbreak of the Second World War again. The reopening took place 1952 in Frankfurt/Main. Tom Sutton pulled with a borrowed typewriter into a converted bathroom in westends. It established the commission system and created an advertising university for the training of talentierten new generation. Later he was called to London, in order to reorganize European headquarters at the Berkeley Square. Today JWT employs approx. 220 coworkers in Germany (Frankfurt/Main, Hamburg, Duesseldorf).

J. Walter Thompson is part of WPP (Wire and plastic Products) one of the world-wide largest communication getting thing.

The firm philosophy of JWT exists goes out of it that the business consists of it, "„the time of humans to buy "“, and that it concerns with this model around a qualitative, not a quantitative time term. Therefore one must offer necessarily new solutions to customers.

To the customers large enterprises belong, like e.g. Unilever, Kraft Foods, Mazda, Rolex, Pfizer, DTC before times De Beers, Shell, Vodafone, Bosch, Samsung and HSBC.
