The term Kardiomegalie one names an enlargement of the heart, which lies outside of the standard. Kardiomegalie is not an independent disease picture, but a secondary organ change, which can be attributed to other basic illnesses.

Causes

A Kardiomegalie can be the result of a physiological multi-demand, or result from pathological processes. Releasing factors and/or illnesses e.g. are:

  • Extreme physical training (achievement sportsman)
  • Hypertonia
  • Heart flap illnesses
  • Kardiomyopathien
  • High-grade anemia
  • Hyperthyreodismus
  • Haemochromatosis
  • Amyloidose
  • Akromegalie
  • Diphtherie

Symptoms

As long as a critical size is not exceeded, a Kardiomegalie can be asymptomatisch and discover only as coincidence findings in the radiograph. In the advanced stage it becomes apparent by heartbeat disturbances and the indications of the Herzinsuffienz.

Diagnosis

A Kardiomegalie is diagnosed typically by the x-ray examination (Roentgen thorax). Pointing the way that is heart/thorax quotient (CTR) in that per annum - projection. If it is larger than 0.5, refers to a Kardiomegalie. This numerical value should be however always judged in the connection, since it can be increased e.g. also with strong adiposity, pregnancy, Aszites and funnel chest.

Cave: When X-raying with mobile devices (a.p. - Projection) appears the heart projection increased. As indication is considered to a Kardiomegalie here, if the Herzsilhouette affects the left thorax wall.
