The Ketwurst is the East German modification of the Hot Dogs.

For preparation a special support sausage, which is larger than with Hot Dogs, in the Wasserbad is heated up. A special, oblong and soft roll is gespiesst on a hot metal cylinder, in order to create a cavity and warm up the roll. Then the sausage is getunkt into a special Ketchup and put into the roll. The additions such as roasting bulbs and spice cucumbers, usual with Hot Dogs, are void.

The Ketwurst, like also the Grilletta, was invented by coworkers of the HO TV tower in Berlin 1977 or 1978. With their assistance the visitor quantities of the Alexanderplatz, for which the capacity of the surrounding restaurants was not sufficient, should be supplied better. It was offered for the first time 1979. On the 3. Range fair of the masters from tomorrow its inventors one received "„to acknowledgment for excellent achievements"… for the exhibit supplying solution Ket sausage "“.

The designation Ketwurst is a word creation from Ketchup and sausage - Anglizismen such as Hot Dog were not desired in the GDR at this time.
