A knowledge management system (English: Knowledge management system) is an information system, which supports the process of the collection, dressing and mobilization of funds of the entire knowledge of an organization (knowledge management) by computers.

The entire knowledge of an organization is understood in such a way with the fact that data and information are present in computers, on paper or in the heads of the coworkers, who should belong to the total knowledge of the organization and be put to all other coworkers at the disposal. The focus is thereby on the suitable presentation of knowledge in contrast to pure data or items of information.

Such systems had to again invent their origin in large consulting firms, which have an interest in it, not for each customer and each new project the "“wheel"”. Since then such systems penetrated in nearly each branch of industry.
