The six month's training as the Kriminalbeamten (KrB) could begin after at least service as (more university-formed) safety guard civil servants.

The training covered in particular

• Kriminalistik with Kriminaltaktik, Kriminaltechnik and police service customer
• Kriminologie
• State and constitutional law
• Criminal law as well as the interference right of sections concerned of the law of criminal procedure
• General administrative law as well as special administrative law here in particular police right
• Official right
• Applied psychology
• Right medicine

After conclusion the official one in the Kriminaldienst transact agency assigned and provided service in civilian clothes and civilian service car, was however with service weapon and other equipment (e.g. Handcuffs) equipped.

The Kriminaldienst was responsibly for the determination of Strafdelikten, thus judicially punishable facts, which can be arranged roughly into the following groups:

• Crimes approximately life and limb (e.g. Murder)
• Crimes against strange fortune (e.g. Theft, robbery, fraud, defraudation)
• Crimes against the morality (e.g. Rape)
• (e.g. Falsification of documents, falsification of money)

Kriminalbeamten work thus during the judicial prosecution as executive organs, which can be consulted from the public prosecutor's office or the examining magistrate to the operational determination.

Concerning their ranks a standing official did not differ in principle from safety guard officials in the Kriminaldienst - against partial also opinion spread by TV-series does not give it "„commissioners "“(commissioner i.S.v. rank of the German police) in Austria.
