Originally the Kriminologie however the natural sciences came of, in particular to biology. The Phrenologie as well as generally the biological anthropology referred to genetic causes of the "“born criminal"” (Cesare Lombroso). With increasing influence of the genetics however also lately is again tried to attach the explanation value of biological and chemical causes of the deviating behavior greater importance.

Raffaele Garofalo used the term for the first time in its 1885 Monografie "“Criminologia"” appeared. Literally it means "“theory of the criminality"”. The Kriminologie is from the term the science of the crime. The cause research of criminality plays today an important role in the everyday life. The criminality fear in particular older humans is topic of the Kriminalpolitik like also the substantial criminality load of children, young people and growing up.

The term of the Kriminologie is to be differentiated from the term of the Kriminalistik. Both sciences can be regarded as subsidiary science that in each case different one. While a primary goal of the Kriminologie is the abstract (thus in a certain case not referred) realization production over the causes and manifestations of criminality, the Kriminalistik concerns itself with the concrete - practical - question of preventing (prevention) and fight against criminal offences.

Kriminologie covers in particular the criminality theories (under it also the control theories or "“stop theories"”); to the Kriminologie also the range of the Sinnhaftigkeit must be placed by punishment.

Important aspects are beside it the individual participants of the criminality: The author and the victim. The victim does not have to be compellingly humans, the legal order becomes always victim with committing of criminal offences.

If one regards criminality as mass phenomenon, the Kriminologie uses also the well-known Kriminalstatistiken. These have then also substantial portion to the Kriminalpolitik practiced, can which be spread also easily to mediating numbers better, as referring to complicated investigations. Central one of terms here are the light field and the Dunkelfeld.

Kriminologie as academic subject is seen in particular as basic subject or as annex subject to the criminal law. A structure course of studies "“Kriminologie"” exists at present at the University of Hamburg (conclusion: Dipl. - Kriminologe). Here also a KriminologieWiki is maintained. Starting from autumn 2006 the Kriminologie encyclopedia KrimLEX on-line will be available. Since the winter semester 2005/2006 there is a zweisemestrigen master course of studies at the Ruhr University Bochum "„to Kriminologie and police science "“. The course of studies is practical and addresses themselves both at applicants with at least an final jurisprudential study and to persons from the ranges of the police, social work as well as from other vocational fields with a suitable specialized university technical and a relevant professional experience.
