In the spring Leica brought the digital camera Digilux 1 to 2002 in co-operation with Matsushita/Panasonic on the market. This became the first product from this strategic partnership. Due to the relatively high speed and other qualities Leica designated the Digilux 1 than report camera and wanted thereby of the legendary Leica I of 1925 to remind. Beside the Retrodesign falls large 2.5 " - display with that singular swinging out light pit in the eye. As is the case for the classical cameras the control elements are attached in the form of keys and adjusting wheels at the and must be selected not first over a menu.

The Leica Digilux 1 was regarded by the Leica photographers with large skepticism (after the early and as failed regarded efforts in the building of digital cameras of Leica in co-operation with Fuji). Above all the bad quality of the optical Suchers (for Leica conditions) as well as the high price prevented this for time at that time modern camera from a large success.

The Digilux 1 is considered as the first Leica digital camera (earlier digital Leicas were OEM products).
