Joseph Leopold of Auenbrugger (* 19 November 1722 in Graz; "† 18. May 1809 in Vienna) was an important physician (and besides also Librettist). It is considered as the inventors of the medical investigation technology of the Perkussion.

Biography

Leopold Auenbrugger is born on 19 November 1722 in Graz as a son of a restaurant operator/barkeeper. It means that it already helps its father in the pub as a child "“to the black Mohren"” and he learns in such a way to measure the filling of wine barrels by Beklopfen of the barrel wall.

It studies first in Graz, then in Vienna medicine, where it is active after conclusion of the study starting from 1751 in the Spanish hospital as a physician. In this time it the sound differences fall on those develop, if one knocks on different places of the chest wall on their surface. It continues to examine and publishes this phenomenon 1761 a work with the title Inventum new fact ex percussione thoracis humani ut signo abstrusos interni pectoris morbos detegendi (new invention by means of fastening to the thorax, as an indication to discover around hidden chest diseases). It is considered thus as an inventor of the Perkussion.

It describes therein under arnderem the phenomenon of the absorption and explains it with the decreased air content of the fabric. It lists also various disease pictures, with which it finds an intensified absorption of the knocking sound.

The work receives no large attention initial and comes almost into oblivion. 1762 it leaves the Spanish hospital and becomes a yard physician of Maria Theresia. Only another of its writings over the treatment of different diseases with Campher (1783) brings it far larger reputation. 1784 are lent to it the title of nobility of noble by Auenbrugger. The writing over the Perkussion comes nearly forty years into oblivion and by the body physician Napoleon Jean Nicolas Corvisart is only rediscovered, into the French translated and 1808 into Paris published. The first version in German language appears 1843 in Vienna.

It writes also the libretto to a Singspiel of Antonio Salieri - whose witness at the marriage it was 1775 - with the title of the Rauchfangkehrer, which 1781 in Vienna premiere celebrate.

Appreciation

Leopold Auenbrugger applies for the inventor of the Stethoskopes with its discovery as well as Thophile Hyacinthe (1781-1826), as a Wegbereiter of the physical diagnostics. Perkussion and Auskultation are clinical basis investigations of the medicine, which are not to be excluded no more from the medical everyday life.
