List (of Italian lista: Border, paper strip) generally marks a certain listing or a form of listing structure. A list is for example alphabetical or chronological topic tables collection of certain terms and their arrangement according to a principle. A collection of certain terms in temporal arrangement is called also chronicle.
In computer science the list is a data structure with a finite number of elements. These elements can be of different type list (data structure).
For compositions of terms under quantitative aspect and the representation of hierarchical structures one uses frequently tables, whereby tables can be understood as the combination several lists. Lists, tables etc. make overview-like orientations and comparisons possible. They make achievement just as clearly recognizable as defects. Depending upon emphasis they cross with references of other lists and are offered thus the condition for systematizations, associations, new questions or even answers.
In a good special book in or several registers, collections of names, things, persons, calendar dates and other references offer a search possibility, which goes the far beyond orientation of the table of contents.

A characteristic are check lists (eigentl. Check lists), which support a work routine. A check list contains points with settled and incomplete activities or examinations. Check lists can be a component so-called standard operating Procedures (SOP), see also question catalog.
Inserting elements becomes as a lists, which opposite - delivering - called listing.
Catalogs and listings are lists with an inventory character and can be differently categorized.
In the broader sense also the critical path method one is graphic or tabular prepared list of events, which are from each other represented in their time and event-referred dependence.
