Lorenz Heister (* 16 September 1683 in Frankfurt/Main; "† 10 April 1758 in Bornum at the Elm) was a German Anatom, which admits for its writings over the surgery became.

Life

Lorenz Heisters father Johann Heinrich Heister was a restaurant operator/barkeeper. After the attendance of the High School in Frankfurt Lorenz took up a medicine study, allegedly inspired by a demonstration famous "“doctor"” of the Eisenbarth on the Frankfurt fair. According to studies in pouring, Wetzlar as well as in the Netherlands Leyden he assisted to field physicians in the Spanish succession war, studied then mathematics, optics and mechanics. In Amsterdam it attained a doctorate to the Dr. med., before it pulled again as a field physician into the war. Then it was appointed as the professor to the University of old village. Before the assumption of office 1710 it visited Oxford and Cambridge, became acquainted with on this journey also Isaac Newton. 1712 he married EH Maria Hildebrandt, the daughter of a lawyer.

1719 reached Heister the call of the University of Helmstedt. To Helmstedt Heister beside the medical transferred also still the chair for Botanik, it developed a botanischen garden, which was to have been one the largest and most beautiful in completely Germany. Heister should several times abgeworben to become, should e.g. as a body physician from Peter to the large one to Petersburg go. It remained however in Helmstedt. At the beginning of of April 1758 it into 20 kilometers removed village Bornum at the Elm called, in order to operate a patient. It got sick during the journey and on 10 April 1758 in the there parsonage building at a "“heated chest fever"” died.

1712 appeared a writing over the nature grey star, that is a turbidity of the lens, which drew a scholar controversy for many years in completely Europe. 1717 it seized its numerous anatomical studies together in the Compendium Anatomicum. This book was fundamental still for a long time after its death for the anatomy training not only at German universities. 1719 then it crowned its literary activity with the "“surgery"”. That is a book, "“where everything that to the Wund medicine belong according to the newest and best kind are thoroughly discussed and in many copper boards the again invented and helpful instruments together with the most comfortable handles of the surgical operations vorgestellet clearly."” With this work Heister in double regard entered new ground. On the one hand in Germany, no respectable physician concerned himself this with surgery, was thing of the before, at least. On the other hand scientific books were not written in German language. At these two points also the enormous meaning can be pointed out, which had Heister for the surgery. The book appeared also in a simplified expenditure for and midwives. The numerous designs are of Heister themselves, it already as a child a drawing thoroughly had probably learned, and because it was not content with the copper passes in its first books, it learned the copper stinging as a professor in old village still. It was translated into many languages, among them Japanese. Its last edition experienced it in Germany 1779, thus 60 years after appearance of the first edition.
