Luis Federico Leloir (* 6 September 1906 in Paris; "† 3 December 1987 in Buenos Aires) was an Argentine biochemist, who received 1970 the Nobelpreis for chemistry for its discovery of the sugar nucleotides and their meaning for the synthesis from coal hydrates.

Biography

Luis Federico Leloir was born 1906 in Paris in France, was thus native Frenchman. Already as a child it pulled however with its parents to Argentina and studied starting from 1924 medicine at the university in Buenos Aires. it attained a doctorate to 1932 at the same and worked thereafter as a research assistant on Institut for physiology of the university. 1941 he became a professor for physiology at the University of Buenos Aires and took over starting from 1947 the line of the institute for biochemical research of the Fundacion Campomar.

As Leloir 1970 the Chemienobelpreis was it received the first south American, who was distinguished with this price, altogether received only to two other south Americans a Nobelpreis 1970 ago.

Work

Luis Federico Leloir began into the 1950er years with its research over coal hydrates and sugar molecules, whereby he itself on the metabolism of the same concentrated. It could zeien that the Polysaccharide consist as for instance the Chitin or the cellulose of individual parts and are synthesized over sugar nucleotides. It could clear the biosynthesis up of these Polysaccharide and also the individual enzymes, which are used for the structure, identify and examine. He discovered Uridindiphospho glucose (UDP glucose) under others than first well-known sugar nucleotide, which from the nucleotide from the cousin uracil and the Ribose, which sugar glucose as well as two phosphate molecules exists.

1953 showed Leloir that the Glykosylrest of the Trehalose is made available with the biosynthesis by UDP glucose. it could prove the same to 1955 also with the Rohrzucker (Saccharose), from which it derived that it concerns thereby a process existing with all sugar synthesis processes. After these research it concentrated strengthened on the formation Glykogen as well as on the strength and could prove a similar education also here.
