Luther Burbank (* 7. March 1849 in Lancaster, Massachusetts; "† 11 April 1926 in Santa pink one, California) was an US-American plant breeder, who bred several hundred new fruit, vegetable and ornamental plant sorts.

Biografie

Luther Burbank became to 7. March 1849 on a farm in the village Lunenburg in Massachusetts, the USA born.

Childhood and training

Already in recent years it showed large interest both at nature and at the technology. These interests promoted of his uncle, a department manager in a Bostoner Musium and its friend, the Swiss-American natural scientist Louis Agassiz.

Vocational career

Under the impression of Charles Darwins variation OF Animals and Plants of under Domestication made Burbank it it's duty to select by selection better plants and to develop by crossing new sorts.

Its first commercial success arose more or less coincidentally as a result of selection: In the year 1871 he found a potato fruit and sowed the 23 seeds contained in it. One of the plants showed up very productively, with large, firm potatoes. It sold the rights at the potato for $150, in order to be able to pay to 1875 a removal to California. In Santa pink one, where three of its brothers had already established themselves, it created a nursery garden with greenhouse and attempt surfaces.

Success

Luther Burbank was unbelievably popular at its time, a star in the range of the Botanik and plant breeding. It was considered as "“Zauberer"” within the range of the plants. Many famous personalities of its time, like e.g. Edison, visited it and its farm. This very day bedeuted the verb "“ton burbank"” as much as a changing and an improving of plants. The potato sort "“Burbank"” ranks among the most important sorts on the US market.

Refusal

Luther Burbank had never made make no secret from his freidenkerischen opinions. But a newspaper interview in the year 1926, in which it explained explicitly not to believe in a unsterbliche soul led to a world-wide proclamation. In addition, Burbank got some agreement, became from hate letters. Its friends stated, the grief and the argument with these religious zealots to his fast physical fall and, based on his condition only few months before, early death had led.

Work by Luther Burbank

He works substantial parallel and generally speaking yardstick. To creation of a new sort it accomplished dozens of crossings, partially with plants, which it could be sent from the whole world.

Usually experiments with several million plants ran parallel up to 3000. During its work on plums it tested approx. 30000 new sorts.

Criticism and effect

Burbanks working and its successes led to the introduction of a law over the patenting barness of planting places in the year 1930. Up to this time there was no protection for breeders before the fact that that others increased and sold their breeding.
