The term Manchester liberalism is conceptually related, however the term "“Manchester capitalism"” is used i.d.R. capitalism-critically and describes therefore more strongly the substantial social inclinations in the phase of the industriellen revolution in Great Britain starting from center 18. Century. With it often a criticism at the laissez-faire liberalism is connected.

Social situation of the worker layers

It came to numerous abuse features in "“wild capitalism"”:

  • Kinderarbeit
  • inhuman work times from often 12 to even 14 hours
  • arbitrary treatment
  • and/or exploitation
  • Schutzlosigkeit with industrial accidents
  • Poverty of old persons, patients and weak ones

The possibilities usually of the privately operated arm welfare service, against these conditions of working remained limited.

It should be noted with the fact that the living conditions of the worker layers were not constantly bad. In the width were not always given these descriptions of misery. The prosperity rose on the average between 1750 and 1914, for example had the number of deaths in England 1740 a value of 38,4 per thousand, up to the year 1800 sank it to 27,1 per thousand, while the Durschschnittseinkommen rose.

The social inequality however often prevented that the worker layers profited from these progress. The poverty among the workers was largely, particularly with the factory hands, so that it came into Great Britain (inclusive Ireland) between 1815 to 1914 to 17 million emigrants, thus a mass emigration.

Historical development

The pauperization features disappeared only gradually, when the workers of minimum wages, contractual warranties in the medical case, fought for with industrial accidents and with unemployment as well as a age and an invalidity pension. The hope released by the free trade movement, which general living conditions of the factory hands would improve, did not fulfill themselves by waived trade barriers (e.g. corn laws) not, the food prices sank not.

Although the average income was quite high in Great Britain 1850, compared with other European states, at the same time the pauperization of the worker layers was more pronounced. Other countries, e.g. Germany and France, caught up 1850 and 1914 between economically opposite Great Britain strongly, and overhauled in this historical phase in the pro head national product, despite or possibly also because of their projection/lead in the active fight against poverty.

History of the impact

  • Civil social reformers such as George Heinrich Sieveking, Caspar Voght or Robert Owen tried with numerous to work partly utopian ideas of the general pauperization against the worker.
  • The social situation of the worker layers found numerous expression in the contemporary literature, e.g. with Charles of thickening
  • The Verelendungserscheinugen energized numerous intellectual ones, e.g. William Lovett, J.R. of Stevens, Feargus Edward O"´Connor, Etienne Cabet, Pierre Leroux, Phillipe Soseph Buchez, Lois Blanc, Filippo Michele Buonarrotti, Giuseppe Mazzini, Babeuf, Pierre Joseph Proudhon, Ferdinand leave or Saint Simon. They developed proposals for solution, often utopian or romantic nature or energized legislative initiatives.
  • Socialist movements and/or the workers' movement and trade unions developed in reaction to the social states of distress of the worker layers
  • The marxism appointed itself, also as the legitimacy, to a roughly oversubscribed fright picture of conditions in the Manchesterkapitalimus.

Earlycapitalistic developments and capitalism criticism

Surely it is quite difficult to judge today's economic questions from the light of history but one could quite arrive in the historical comparison in the end that a focusing has a favorable influence on the overall economic development on education, scientific, technical, in addition, social progress, in combination with a strong constitutional state, free trade and a free-market economy created on Fairness.

The thesis that bad social conditions improve from alone, if one leaves free run to the forces of the market on basis of unsettled contracts, find perhaps in future history confirmation - the history of the industriellen revolution as well as the misery in early capitalism in Great Britain confirm rather the necessity for a civilization of capitalism, while anarchokapitalistische conceptions find here rather little confirmation.

Warning of ideologically coined/shaped aspects

Social conditions in early capitalism are a range, where ideological aspects will probably in the future coin/shape the valuation of history to have always strongly coined/shaped and. Depending upon economic idea school conditions are expressed differently estimated and rated. Because easily from restaurant economics only that is picked out, what was read in before. As far the view of history can differ, becomes clear, if for example Marxist views of conditions of British early capitalism are compared with dedicated liberal views. Hardly something is more difficult than a view of history, free of prejudices, valuations and interests.
