Rank "marshal of Italy "(ital. Maresciallo D' Italia) was in fascist Italy the highest military rank at the army. At the Air Force there was beside it the of equal standing Maresciallo dell' Aria (air marshal), at the navy the Grande Ammiraglio (large admiral). Mussolini and king Viktor Emanuel III. led the rank Primo Maresciallo dell' Impero ("first realm marshal "), whereby it concerned however an arrogance Mussolinis, which wanted to place itself thereby on a stage with the monarch. After the Second World War Italy created not only the rank "marshal of Italy "and its equivalents off, but also the rank of generals D' Armata (army general) and its equivalents. Highest rank remained to 1997 "the lieutenant general (Vice Admiral) in special utility position ", which has three stars and "a functional" fourth star in such a way specified. With the reorganization of the general staff of the armed forces developed 1997 the new rank general and/or admiral, who however exclusively the general staff boss of the armed forces is reserved. The chiefs of staff of the armed services and some other (NATO) command posts are further only "lieutenant generals in special serving position "(their fourth star and/or strip has a red edge).

The rank insignia showed four strips ("the three-star generals "and/or Vice Admirals two strips and a crown, the rank had over it had three strips) at all armed services.
