A mayor is the head of a city or a municipality. He is selected depending upon country directly by the citizens or by the city/local council.

In many regions and municipalities in earlier time for the function of the mayor the term Schulze, was used school width unit, or Schult-hot (in cities occasionally also city-Schult-hot). Every now and then the cities had several mayors, whose speaker called itself word-prominent mayor in earlier centuries at the same time. As mayors, who dressed the justiceship often at the same time, excluding full lawyers were selected for many centuries.

In around 1750 was Schult hot the local chief, whom one calls today mayors. The mayor at that time had the function of the today's municipality male nurse.

Germany

In most larger, particularly in circle-free cities there is a mayor or a in Germany as well as one or more assigning to, which carry then occasionally the office designation mayors.

In the city states have the governing mayor (Land Berlin), the first mayor (free one and Hanseatic city Hamburg) and mayor and president of the senate (free Hanseatic city Bremen) the functions of the Prime Minister of a Land of the Federal Republic. In Berlin the deputy of the governing mayor leads the title mayor. The mayor is comparable to a mayor by its rank, in other schleswig holsteinischen cities of comparable and smaller size gives it this title also, in Luebeck it however for historical reasons of far "“mayors"” is only called.

In Rhineland-Palatinate the head of a local municipality is called local mayor. Up to a certain number of inhabitants the local mayors exercise their office honorary. Several (federation-belonging) municipalities form a convention community. Their head is (full-time) a mayor. Federation-free however circle-belonging municipalities are usually cities. The head of such a city is called in Rhineland-Palatinate city mayor and is usually full-time active (due to the larger number of inhabitants).

Tasks

(Full-time) the mayor has different tasks according to the respective Gemeindeordnung:

• He is a chairman of the town councillor and the city administration (in Schleswig-Holstein only the city administration)
• He prepares the resolutions of the political committees
• It is responsible for the conversion of the resolutions
• He is a legal representative of the municipality
• He is the service superior of the coworkers of the municipality
• It is responsible for the adequate completion of the tasks of instruction

Austria

The mayor is selected to a large extent directly depending upon Land of the Federal Republic, in some Lands of the Federal Republic (Lower Austria, Steiermark and Vienna) of the members of the local council. In Vienna the mayor, who is also a national captain of the Land of the Federal Republic Vienna at the same time, is selected not directly, but by the local council (that also federal state parliament is simultaneous).

If the mayor is not selected directly, the majority party (not obligating) mostly places the mayor. This depends however on respective majority conditions.

The mayor is the implementing organ of the local council resolutions. In addition it implements federation and national instructions. The officials of municipality are subordinated to it. It represents a municipality also outward. In affairs of building it is the first instance. In it implements likewise the agendas of the district captain.

In each municipality there are two or three vice-mayors as agency one, depending upon election result and the municipality size.

Switzerland

In Switzerland it does not give the designation to mayors. The similar designation is depending upon place city president, Stadtammann, municipality president, Syndic, Ammann or Gemeindeammann.

South Tyrol

The mayor is selected directly in South Tyrol. There is a difference between the municipalities with more and less than 15,000 inhabitants: In the centers with less than 15,000 inhabitants the mayor between all local council candidates is selected, selected in the larger cities a mayor candidate of a list or a coalition intended for it.

In South Tyrol the intended deputy of the mayor vice-mayor is called and it is selected by the mayor. In places with more than 13,000 inhabitants and in centers, where is intended of the municipal charter, the vice-mayor is to belong to the other language's group in the comparison to the mayor.

The mayor is a boss of the city government, that is called town councillor. In the state capital Bozen he is in the same time also district chairman, who corresponds to a Austrian district captain.
