By a medium break one understands a change of the information-carrying medium within a provision of information or - processing process. Those after information searching (or information processing) person is thereby forced to change in the process of the process its search or processing strategy in order to correspond to that straight available medium. One assumes a medium break lying in the information chain leads to the fact that the provision of information or - processing process and reduced perhaps also in its quality is thereby made more difficult, slowed down.

When example of a medium break can serve the interruption of a business procedure, which results from the fact that data in another form must be further handed, than they became to receive.

A good example of it are purchase order forms of distributing houses. These are filled out handwritten by the orderer and must be transferred with the supplier manually or partly automated into the job execution. In the context of the E-Business one aims at avoiding by integration of the business functions along the creation of value chain such medium breaks. Thus transaction costs are to be reduced, in order to make so the enterprise more competitive.
