The European Metropolregion Hamburg is one of eleven Metropolregionen in Germany. It extends over Hamburg as well as over parts of the Lands of the Federal Republic Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony.
The Metropolregion Hamburg covers the free one and Hanseatic city Hamburg, the districts of Lower Saxony Cuxhaven, Harburg, Dannenberg, Lueneburg, red castle, Soltau Fallingbostel, Stade and Uelzen and the schleswig holsteinischen circles duchy Lauenburg, Segeberg, stone castle, Stormarn, Pinneberg and Dithmar. Altogether the Metropolregion thereby covers about 4 million inhabitant.
The senate of the free ones and Hanseatic city Hamburg, which federal state government of Lower Saxony and the federal state government of Schleswig-Holstein have 1991 decided to strengthen their regional-political co-operation in the region Hamburg. In view of the high growth pressure at the beginning of the nineties a new, long-term basis for co-operation should be created. The first step was the development frontiers of a spreading regional development concept (REK).
There is the prognosis that the regions of Europe will play a larger role. Therefore the discussion agitates whether individual Lands of the Federal Republic should close better to a north state together. Basis of the co-operation of the three Lands of the Federal Republic under participation of the circles and municipalities is the regional development concept of the Metropolregion Hamburg (1996/Fortschreibung 2001). 1997 was combined the two in the middle of the 1950er years created common regional plannings Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg/Lower Saxony into the common regional planning Metropolregion Hamburg. The Hanseatic city Luebeck and the district Ludwig desire (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) are since 2003 co-operation partners of the Metropolregion Hamburg.
The Metropolregion Hamburg belonged to the first sieved European Metropolregionen in Germany, which were defined on federal level due to their prehistory. (further Metropolregionen is Berlin/Brandenburg, Munich, Nuremberg, the Rhine Main area, Rhine Ruhr, Stuttgart and the Saxonia triangle). Since 2005 of Hamburg is hanseatische sister city Bremen center of the Metropolregion Bremen/Oldenburg. South Hamburg developed 2005 the Metropolregion Hanover Braunschweig Goettingen.
