Milton Hyland Erickson (* 5 December 1901 in Aurum, Nevada, "† 25. March 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona) was an US-American psychiatrist and Psychotherapeut, who coined/shaped the modern Hypnose considerably and whose employment in the Psychotherapie opened.

Life

Milton H. Erickson was born on 5 December 1901 as the second of nine children of the married people Albert and Clara Erickson. Its father was a child of Norwegian immigrants, its nut/mother originated from an old-established family from new England.

With 5 its family drew years to Lowell/Wisconsin, where it visited the primary school and afterwards the High School in the close Wishfield. He suffered from Legasthenie. Its pointed name was at that time "„Dictionary "“, which was justified in its lack of understanding in handling the dictionary. Thus it read the dictionary always from the outset, if it looked for a term. It was considered long time as "„left "“. It could overcome its Legasthenie obviously thereby by practicing difficult letters in hallucination before itself to see.

Briefly after conclusion of the Highschool Erickson gotten sick 1919 at child paralysis. It fell in coma and first had it the appearance that it would not survive the illness. Contrary to the Lehrmeinung prevailing at that time, Erickson compiled individualizable methods.

1925 he married the first time. Three children came out from this marriage.

1928 it locked its study with a master OF kind (M.A.) in psychology and a doctor of the medicine (M.D.). 1930 to 1934 it held different positions up to the leading psychiatrist of the Worcester State hospital in Massachusetts. Here it could research further to the Hypnose and their application type.

1935 became the marriage divorced. Short time he became acquainted with his later Mrs. Betty later. The wedding was 1936. From this marriage further five children followed.

it received the license to practise medicine to 1939 as a specialist for psychiatry.

1934 to 1948 it had a tidy Professur for psychiatry at the medical faculty of the Wayne State university in Detroit, Michigan.

1947 it tightened itself an injury after a bicycle fall. Because of the danger on Tetanus and despite its well-known allergischen reaction to the vaccine, Erickson could be inoculated. The consequence was a anaphylaktischer shock, which it survived only scarcely. In whose he got consequence a heavy allergy against Pollen, which forced it to the removal into the mild climate of Phoenix (Arizona), where it opened a private practice. Further allergies arose against house dust and different food. It operated therefore its practice directly from at home.

it got sick to 1953 again with child paralysis in connection with Muskeldystrophie. It went to Maryland. As far as it was possible for it, it continued however his up to then extensive literary activities and lecture journeys. In this time he co-operated intensively with Jay Haley, Gregory Bateson, Margaret Mead, Lawrence Kubie and John Weakland.

1957 created Erickson the American society for clinical Hypnose, whose presidency he took over. 1958 it created "„the American journal OF Clinical Hypnosis "“, which it gave out until 1968.

Because of its increasingly worsening state of health gave itself up it to 1969 his lecture and travel activities; 1974 it gave up also its private practice.

Starting from 1976 it got sick a second time at child paralysis, with muscle decrease and multiple pain conditions. Afterwards it was bound and in the face halflaterally to the wheelchair.

To 25. March 1980 died Milton Erickson in its house in Phoenix.

Achievements

It called the unconsciousness, into which the illness brought him, later the beginning of its interest in Trance conditions. The phase of the convalescence, in which the medicine left little hope for complete recovery to it, used Erickson, now partial dissociations to practice.

Erickson is to be owed it that Hypnose was used into the Psychotherapie again more, after she had moved long time by Sigmund Freud"´s refusal into the background. It developed a new beginning. This stresses the individuality of each individual client/patient and from this following the necessity to find for everyone the suitable beginning and entrance. This beginning stood in the contrast to the standardized and authoritarian methods, which were prevailing into and the 60's 50's. Furthermore Erickson stresses the positive role of the unconscious one. Differently than with Freud the unconscious is inexhaustible resources for creative Selbstheilung for Erickson. The unconscious is the stronghold of hardly used experiences of humans. Ericksons beginning has as a goal to extend the ability of consciousness limited by rigid patterns and thought pattern as the Hypnotiseur makes by special verbal and non verbal techniques it for the unconscious one possible to take the prominent role. At the same time it is made possible for consciousness to accept and integrate the unconscious self healing forces and creative resources.

Ericksons method of the Hypnotherapie however worked over Jay Haley up to the founders of the NLP, Richard Bandler and John Grinder. These have the way, like Erickson masterfully with the hypnotischen language worked in their own model, which described Milton model.

Already during its lifetime Erickson had acquired itself the call of a unique master of the Hypnose. He came with his call even on the title page of Time. Its numerous scientific publications revolutionized a thinking concerning the Hypnose fundamentally. Jeff show and Ernest Rossi were over many years pupils of Erickson and some books also with it together published. In its death year 1980 also the Milton Erickson society was created in its honours, which accommodates to today archives of its work umfassendeste in Phoenix.

Erickson had professional contacts also to Aldous Huxley, with which he investigated frontiers of the psychology.
