A money economy is the economic system with money as general currency. It is a contrast to Naturalwirtschaft and bartering.

By the currency money specializations in the economy became easier. The sense of the money lay once desiring to have an article of exchange which has always equal lasting value. Different factors in one or did not only part-subsidize economics do not permit however. Nevertheless money is the only universal article of exchange, which makes trade only possible over large distances. In the Naturalwirtschaft are the articles of exchange - which are usually perishable goods or mortal animals - a fast depreciation subjected.

Money economy also strictly speaking that part of an economic system is called, which works mainly directly with money, about banks and insurance, contrary to the example to agriculture and industry.
