The Musculus extensor hallucis longus (lat.: long Grosszehenstrecker) is a skeleton muscle of the leg and one the Strecker at the Unterschenkel. In the top it is covered by Musculus tibialis anterior and Musculus extensor digitorum longus.
With the animals the muscle is called also Musculus extensor digiti I longus. With animals with reduced number of toe jets (e.g. ) It does not seem to horse, cattle, goat as independent muscles.
The Musculus extensor hallucis longus is responsible to the large toe (Hallux) for the Dorsalflexion (pull upward). In addition it is involved to the Dorsalflexion of the foot.
With the animals with an independent Musculus extensor digiti I longus (e.g. carnivore, pig, sheep) bends these the jump joint and stretches the mediale toe.
