The Musculus orbicularis oris ("ring muscles of the mouth") is a circular closing muscle around the mouth opening and forms the fleshy basis of the lips. The tonische contraction of the Musculus orbicularis oris provides for closing the mouth opening. If only the outside portions will contract themselves the lips as for kissing sharpened (in English it therefore also as "kissing muscle" designation).
The muscle becomes from the sieved cranial nerve, the Nervus facialis (VII) internal fourth. A one-sided leads to a of the Mundwinkels and thus to flowing out saliva. The operability of the Nervens can be examined with the Orbicularis oris reflex.
