The Musculus plantaris (lat.: Sole muscle), belongs to the superficial Beugern of the Unterschenkels. It is a small, regressed muscle, which is still very strongly developed with low apes and half apes and irradiates with them over the Calcaneus away into the Aponeurosis plantaris. Therefore also the name.
The Musculus plantaris is functionally almost insignificant, is however involved in the diffraction of the knee and the turn of the bent Unterschenkels inward. Some sources call also a weak Plantarflexion and a Supination of the foot as further functions. There the chord M. plantaris medial the Achilles' tendon at the Tuber calcanei sets appears these data also plausibly.
