In larger cities of Germany (in circle-free cities, large district towns as well as large independent cities and/or many large cities circle-belonging) there is not only a mayor, but a mayor and one or more different, this subordinated mayors or departmental heads responsible for special topics. Details - as for instance the question, who selects the mayor or the - are depending upon Land of the Federal Republic different and in the respective Gemeindeordnung regulated.

In Denmark the appropriate office title is called Overborgmester. In English-language countries the term lord Mayor is used:
