The microbiology (old-Greek , micros "„small "“, , bios "„lives "“and , logos "„word "“) is a subsection of biology and is the science and the science of the micro organisms, thus organisms, which cannot be recognized as individuals with the naked eye: Bacteria, Protozoen (Urtierchen), mushrooms, micro algae and viruses. The microbiology is divided into special fields, like for example medical microbiology, food microbiology, technical microbiology, geo microbiology, sea microbiology, soil microbiology, and after the treated groups of micro organisms:

  • Bacteriology, the science and theory of the bacteria
  • Virologie, the science and theory of the viruses
  • Mykologie, the science and theory of the mushrooms
  • Protozoologie, the science and theory of the Urtierchen

Generally

In the microbiology methods of the Zytologie (science and theory of the cells), the genetics, biochemistry, the ecology and systematics are used. Application finds the microbiology among other things in the biotechnology. Micro organisms are outstanding suitably for the genetic research, there them relatively small, visible Genome possess.

History

The micro-biological research begins with the discovery of Mikrorganismen by Robert Hooke and Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (about 1665-1670). Both were under first, the microscopes designed and a pre-working out for the development of the optical microscope carried.

Further important bases supplied the research of Louis Pasteur, which prevented 1866 with the help of the procedure of the pasteurization developed by it by heating up food on 60-85"°C of fermentation processes, in and so that enormously extended the durability of these food.

The medical microbiology considerably promoted by the work citizens of Berlin of the bacteriologist Robert cook (1843 - 1910), who looked as the first systematically for micro organisms, which released diseases, and with the discovery of the Tuberkuloseerregers proved this.

training in microbiology

The Bachelorstudiengang microbiology has one average period of study of 6 terms and leads to the occupation-qualifying conclusion Bachelor OF Science - microbiology, on this constructs a master course of studies, whose average period of study is at 4 terms.

Statistics

Graduates of the test yearly 2004 needed on the average 5.6 terms up to the Bachelor conclusion, up to the master 7.1 and up to the diploma 12.0 terms.
