The task of a need for information analysis consists of deriving application and program-specific requirements to information systems. Within the economical informatics and the information science this need for information is user-referred defined, which means that the needs for information of the user of the information system concerned action are.

Fundamental questions

With the need for information analysis are to be clarified per project:

  • Which information is needed
  • How frequently is information needed
  • In which form is the information to be present
  • How is information to be transported
  • Is information for the task fulfilment (priority) how

  • Task analysis: Analysis of the decision structures during the task accomplishment; the need for information is derived from arising information deficits
  • Document analysis: Determination of the need for information from the documents, which are relevant for the decision-making process
  • Report method: Information deficits are derived from reports of the decision makers, in order to determine the need for information (interview, questionnaire)

Criticism and extension

The analysis to that extent criticize, that the of it verwendeteten instrument (like e.g. Interviews) are too inaccurate and more precisely into the organization context concerned to be built must.
