Networks systems are called, whose underlying structure can be modelled mathematically as graph and which mechanisms to its organization to have. The graph consists of a quantity of elements (knots), which are connected by means of connections (edges). A closed course from edges and knots is called Masche.Dass the majority of the knots belonged to one or more meshes, is the actual characteristic of a network opposite other types of structures.

Networks are examined on an abstract level in the Netzwerktheorie and in practice in the respective areas of application, from which the concrete nets originate.

Also the politics policy in the European Union is often represented as a network process, since in the organization and conversion by politics a multiplicity in participants and institutions are involved here.

Transferring in single sciences

To the Ethnologie and sociology the term was transferred as "“social network"”, in the management economics as "“network organization"”. In the system theory with "“network"” a quantity of in defined way connected, autonomous objects is designated with one another, which form an entire system.

Also in the political science the network term is used. In the control theory cooperating becomes more private under politics networks (enterprise, groups of interests) and public participants (government, Ministries etc.) within certain politics policies understood. The result are non-hierarchical, decentralized political networks. Other authors generally use the network concept for the designation of different forms of public-private co-operation, which does not have to be organized necessarily decentralized. The participants involved by both beginnings the exchange of resources between is brought up for discussion. Politics networks can develop for implementation regarding the politics policy and -.

Also some theories of the international relations, like global Governance and currents of the constructionalism, state the emergence of networks on international level. Also these are usually mixed nature; the participants involved are for example international organizations, states, individual Ministries and/or national agencies, INGOs, NGOs and/or enterprises. To their activities belong for example the employment for certain minorities and to their rights, employment for the environment etc., bringing in new topics to the global agenda, negotiating global standards, collecting and distributing topic-specific information.
