The nominal wage is the money without consideration of the purchasing power of the money (monetary value), received as wages. If one measures the wages at the purchasing power, then one speaks of real wages.

The term nominal wage is necessary thus only for the demarcation for real wages. A nominal gross wage (wages inclusive taxes and social security contributions) or a nominal net wage (wages less taxes and social security contributions) is the money, which an employee gets. Over the purchasing power of the money the nominal wage does not state anything.
