Officer candidate (OAU) one calls soldiers in the career of the officers before reaching the first officer rank second lieutenant in Germany. The status officer candidate is marked to ranks which can be gone through with all at army and Air Force by a silver cord (braid) at the shoulder strap/shoulder loop, at the navy with a goldfarbenen star on the shoulder strap/shoulder loop and/or at the sleeve.

In Germany in the written rank designation the status officer candidate (OAU) is along-called, omitted in the verbal the additive usually.

  • By own Dienstgradbezeichungen to be replaced that
    • NCO (OAU) /Maat (OAU) with Fahnenjunker/Seekadett
    • Sergeant (OAU) /Bootsmann (OAU) with wo1/wo1 to sea
    • Main sergeant (OAU) /Hauptbootsmann (OAU) with cw2/cw2 to sea,

The transport to the Fahnenjunker presupposes the existed officer candidate training course part of I and a service at the army of min. 12 months, to the wo1 the part of II and a service of min. 22 months. The transport to the cw2 takes place thereafter in the army as rule transport after a minimum service obligation from 30 months. The transports accompany with personnel and material responsibility rising in each case, which finally end starting from cw2 or second lieutenant with the use as platoon leaders. The training as the officer of the troop service takes 36 months in the army min. and regularly afterwards of a 3 study at one of the universities of the German Federal Armed Forces is locked. To 1 July 2006 the officer training at army is changed over. Officer candidates with study go after 15 months (for the first time autumn 2007) to the universities and the officer training course II only afterwards are then already completed. The basic training takes place central in the three troop schools in Munster, Idar Oberstein and mutton castle. The final choice of the branch of service takes place only after the study.

At navy and Air Force the transport of the troop service officer candidates takes place to the sea-cadet and/or Fahnenjunker with successful conclusion of the officer training course part of I/II and handing the officer patent out after 12 months. Up to the appointment as the second lieutenant/second lieutenant to sea, with existed Vordiplom during the study at one of the universities of the German Federal Armed Forces, after rule service one carries. At Air Force and navy the complete training as the officer is only locked by one to the study following officer further training (guidance training/officer training course part of III).

A small part of the officer candidates (approx. 2-4% for each class) is stopped directly as a career officer candidate (BOA). The selection takes place after the results at the officer applicant test center (OPZ). This regulation is however disputed, since it contains selective procedure obligatory approx. 30 a year old job promise after one only.
