The old city hall in Goettingen was established in several sections starting from 1270 and was until 1978 seat of the advice and the administration of the city Goettingen. It stands at the west side of the market place in the midst of the old part of town.

When with the building of the building one began exactly, is not delivered. However investigations show to the still received bar of the medieval roof works that the used woods around the year 1270 pleases became. Therefore one assumes these were used shortly thereafter for the building. In a document from the year 1344 the building of city halls is called "„cophus "“, that one can recognize that the influential Kaufmannsgilde likewise used the building for its purposes. Also already in this time of the cellars of the building as "„more signal "“one used.

In the year 1366 duke Ernst Ith, who governed the Principality of Goettingen at this time, citizen approved the

'' "„dat SE mughen buwen, setten unde maken ore kophus unde rathus tons Gottingen into de straten, wur unde wurvene SE willet unde tons rade unde on dat even unde comfortable is "“

''

(that they build, to set and make their department store and city hall like to Goettingen at the road and on the road where and how it is to want and decide and it them quite and comfortable).

The foundation-stone of the extension and change of the city hall approved thereby was put 1369. The today still received proves the expenditure and the expiration. To the west one resounds existing to the already "„thorn TZE "“(down-German for "„heatable area "“) and the advice kitchen with Vorraum was cultivated. The thorn TZE was the most representative area of the building and served the advice as meeting area. In the upper floor areas were for storage purposes. In early 15. Century received the old mainresounds a new bar cover and south to the advice kitchen a further "„nygen thorn TZE "“cultivated. At this time also an extension of the building was introduced to the south; before it, at the eastern front, stairs were added and a dreijochige summerhouse was set. The tin ring with the round around the roof was left unfinished however at the low extension building. In the year 1540 the interiors were painted by the painter Heinrich Heisen.

In the war the building was back-conquered devastated as the city of Swedish and weimarischen troops under William of Weimar for the Evangelist page. The defending imperial troops withdrew themselves after the conquest of the city fighting in the city hall and arose there only in the so-called blood chamber. After resounds and thereby were completely keep-drawn to ground floor, in the future all representative meetings were shifted into the areas in the upper floor.

After the establishment of the university in 18. Century was reconditioned and modernized the building. Between 1883 and 1886 experienced resound new equipment and painting, which were implemented by the painter Hermann Schaper from Hanover. Also the restaurant in the cellar of the city hall became end 19. Century again furnished. Until 1907 became the building still restored, afterwards the work rested for seventy years.

After the building of the new city hall south the old part of town in the year 1978 the city administration moved there and the now old city hall could after a restoration be umgenutzt. Here the roof over the summerhouse was transformed and a Giebel was put on. The building serves since then for representative purposes and it takes place there regularly exhibitions. Parts of the building serve the tourist board.

The building of break stones is today 41 m long and 21.5 m deeply; to the market side (towards the east) it points two clearly different architectural styles. The northern, higher section is determined by a locking tin ring. The southern section with the summerhouse is controlled by a high rectangle window with working framing. Only with later extension work at the beginning of this century, than a zwischengeschoss was inserted there, this window was increased and is larger therefore than the remaining.
