The OPEL Ascona marks the automobiles middle class of OPELs between 1970 and 1988. The names Ascona comes from a city of the same name in the Italian Switzerland. Successor of the Ascona is the OPEL Vectra.

Ascona A (1970-1975)

In November 1970 OPEL presented the model Ascona as a successor of the OPEL Olympia A. There was it from the outset as 2-und sedan in standard and luxury as well as combination. Its variant was available under the name Voyage, and had at the vehicle flank a glued on wood decoration, this was omitted later. As standard model it was called caravan.

As engines a 1,6l with 68 HP and a 1,6l S with 80 HP were available for introduction on the market, then reduces to 75 HP. The 1,9l S with 90 HP as well as a 1,2l with 60 HP followed.

Expresses distinguishers: early models with tinplate radiator grille - headlight cover brightly, a in the hood, instrument panel with 2 air ducts

Later with plastic radiator grille - headlight cover black, 2 on the hood, 4 air ducts in the instrument panel and partially trim at the belt line.

Equipment variants: Standard, luxury/Voyage, SR

Special models:

Holiday: Luxury equipment, 1,6l /80 HP engine

Swinger: Standardausstattung, signal colors or polar white with strip, 1,2l S /60 HP engine

Ascona B (1975-1981)

1975 were introduced the new Ascona B. This model was offered to sedan only as 2 - and/or. The car there was with from the predecessor admitted engines with 1,6 now l: 44 KW and 55 KW (60/75 HP), 1.9 l 55 KW and 66 KW as well as with a new 1,2-l-44-kW-Motor.

1978 gave it a new engine (2,0-l-Diesel with 43 kW/58 HP) for the Ascona. Besides now also a 2.0 litre with 66 and/or 74 KW (90/100 HP) was available.

Starting from 1979 there was a special sport execution of the Ascona, on the occasion of the Rallyeerfolge of OPELs. The number of items necessary for the Homologation flowed into the name: Ascona 400. There were several Tuning kits in different performance levels. The basis motorizing formed a 2,4-l-106-kW-Vierventiler. Again the models 1.3 l with 44 and 55 KW as well as the 2.0 E with 81 KW were added.

A further sporty model was the Ascona i2000, which carried the 120PS out with a double carburetor plant, was equipped. It was based on the 2.0SR and exclusively in yellow/white was delivered.

The Ascona B was sold in Great Britain as Vauxhall Cavalier. This model was equipped with the front portion of the OPEL Manta B and had thus its own appearance.

Ascona C (1981-1988)

The 1981 imported Ascona front wheel drive had C. Its form deviated much from the fashion at that time, in order not to verscheuchen the buyers of the model cadet. There was it in different engine variants:

  • 1.3 l, 44 KW (60 HP) (of carburetors)
  • 1.3 l, 55 KW (75 HP) (of register carburetors)
  • 1.6 l, 53 KW (72 HP) (of central A SPLASHEs with catalyst)
  • 1.6 l, 55 KW (75 HP) (of central A SPLASHEs with catalyst)
  • 1.6 l, 66 KW (90 HP) (of register carburetors)
  • 1.8 l, 74 KW (100 HP) (of a splashes with catalyst)
  • 1.8 l, 66 KW (90 HP) (of a splashes with catalyst)
  • 1.8 l, 62 KW (84 HP) (of E-carburetors)
  • 1.8 l, 85 KW (115 HP) (of a splashes)
  • 2.0 l, 85 KW (115 HP) (of a splashes with catalyst)
  • 2.0 l, 96 KW (130 HP) (of a splashes)
  • 1.6 l, 40 KW (54 HP) centrifugal chamber Diesels

The Ascona C was offered to notchback sedan as 2 - and as well as diagonal tail sedan with rear flap. Specialized body farmer modfizierten besides the notchback sedan to a Cabriolet. There three companies buhlten around the opening market. At least of one the vehicles were sold officially over the OPELs dealers.

It was conceived original as common successor of cadet D and Ascona B, since the sales of these two models permitted first apparently no independent successors, what however the customer's request did not correspond, why it came to the development cadet of the E. From these reasons the relatively compact form (the car should not become very much larger than the cadet) explains itself, the more to the cadet D than at the Ascona B angelehte form, as well as the combi Coupe flow tail model mentioned.

A GT-version gave it with 1,6 l 55/66 KW of 1.8 l 85 KW and that to 2.0 l 85 KW engine with catalyst. There was that GT also with that 2.0 l 96 KW engine. Further the version GT/Sport supplemented the equipments, which is considered as direct successors of the SR/E. Then also still officially over the OPELs the dealer refugee Ascona Sprint was manufactured by Irm, with which it concerned as far as possible an optically modified

By 30 June 1986 1,349,812 Ascona C were manufactured.

There was the Ascona C in three model rows, sometimes also to c1, C2 and C3 mentioned:

  • Ascona c1 (1981-1984)
  • Ascona C2 (1985-1986)
  • Ascona C3 (1987-1988)

The Ascona C was sold in Great Britain as Vauxhall Cavalier. This model was available also in a combination version (Vauxhall Cavalier Estate), which was not offered in Germany. It was manufactured by Holden in Australia.

Besides in the middle of the 1990er became years by Daewoo produced, on which Ascona sells C based, Espero also in Germany.

Already in the 50's in Switzerland special models were designated after the place Ascona at the Lago Maggiore. This based among other things on the Olympia record P1 and the cadet B.
