OPEL lightning was the name for the easy truck series the Adam OPEL AG. The name of the model row supplied also the Logo of the enterprise.

1930 to 1954

The first lightning model was built 1930 and became soon the backbone of the German troops in the Second World War. After the war the work Brandenburg was to the Havel, in which OPEL had manufactured lightning, however lost. Parallel lightning under license had been manufactured also at Daimler Benz, where the manufacturing was again taken up in June 1945. The vehicles produced there were partly sold under the name OPEL and partly under the name Mercedes Benz. OPEL made the last vehicles of parts of themselves already prefabricated, after the production lightning at Daimler Benz of the 1949 had ended. A successor in this size class (3 t pay load) did not give it from OPELs.

A smaller lightning model (1.5 t pay load) had been built for 1946 since 1938 at Ruesselsheim, production ran.

1952 to 1960

1952 received the OPEL lightning a substantially more modern arranged driving cab. The vehicle was available as box and plank bed cars, the drive exclusively takes place via petrol engines with six cylinders.

Lightning panorama bus

The lightning panorama bus was manufactured between 1953 and 1956 in an edition by only 67 pieces on behalf the Adam OPEL AG by the company It offers 17 persons place. The capacity amounts to 2,473 ccm with a six cylinder row engine with 58 HP. The maximum speed amounts to 95 km/h.

1960 to 1965

Starting from 1960 a revised OPEL lightning was produced. The hood had become substantially more briefly, a diesel engine was not available however further not.

1965 to 1975

1965 came the last generation of the OPEL lightning on the market. Further excluding petrol engines were inserted. The desire of the customers for diesel engined vehicles was ignored to 1968, whereby the sales figures continued to sink ever. Starting from 1968 lightning was available as also with a diesel engine of Peugeot. Commercial motor vehicle production with OPELs was spareless stopped 1975. An English small transporter under the name Bedford lightning was sold from 1973 to 1987, whose success in Germany remained granting however. Only 1998 followed with the Movano a further small transporter of the mark OPEL.

Competitors of the OPEL lightning were above all Ford transit of the Mercedes Benz L319 and the appropriate models of Hanomag and/or Hanomag Henschel.
