The OPEL omega, a passenger car of the manufacturer Adam OPEL AG, 1986 came as a successor of the OPEL record E on the market.

Omega A

That omega was offered to caravan as sedan or as and had a completely again designed chassis, which ranked at that time also among the best in this Fahrzeugklasse. The body had a sensationally low cw-value of 0,28, which resulted in very good road performances in the case of at the same time low consumption. That was selected by the engine press omega to the "“car of the yearly 1987"”.

Initially there was engines with 1,8 l capacity and 60 KW (82, 90 and 115PS) without catalyst as well as already from the cadet the GSi admitted 2.0 l with 85 KW (115 HP with catalyst) or 90 KW (122 HP without catalyst). In addition still from the record coming the 2.3 l 1986 Diesel and/or turbo-diesel engines with 73 and/or 100 HP came. By September 1988 until October 1992 there was a 2,4l-Einspritzmotor with 92 KW (125 HP), which was a further developed record engine. Starting from October 1990 there was to sedan and caravan also with the 2,6l-Sechszylinder C26NE.

Parallel that was offered to omega starting from 09/86 in a sporty variant as "“omega 3000"”. First were from the senator A admitted 3.0 l with 115 KW (156 HP with catalyst) or 130 KW (177 HP without catalyst) available. Starting from spring 1987 then more modernized 3.0 l with 130 KW (177 HP with catalyst) was available. Starting from this time the 3.0 l with 156 HP in the omega was not no more offered. In October 1990 again developed 3.0 the l 24V engine with 150 KW (204PS) was added. This engine had two obenliegende cam shafts and a switching suction tube (dual RAM) and offered very good road performances with relatively low consumption. Still stronger omegas 1990/91 were introduced: The omegas evolution 500,3.0 24V was a Rennmaschine, which received a road permission to Homologationszwecken. The engine (230 HP) was created by the Tuner Irm by modification 3.0 of the l 24V. Parallel to the omega from 1987 to 1993 the Top model at that time "“senator was offered to B"”. The senator on the German market only with by the omega A admitted six cylinder row engines offered, for some foreign markets gave it still the 2,3-Liter-Turbodiesel. The technical relationship with the omega A was very high.

There was the strongest omega from 1989 to 1992. This Lotus omega 3,6l 24V Bi-turbo had 277 KW (377 HP) and cost last approx. 125,000 DM. Was built the Lotus omega in England on basis omega 3000 in very small numbers of items of the sports car sportwagenschmiede Lotus, which belonged at that time to the GM company. In England the Lotus omega was sold as Lotus Carl clay/tone.

Omega B

1994 were replaced the past omega A by its successor, the omega B. Now finally also a Airbag system in the omega could be realized by the more rigid body. That omega B was from the outset equipped with 2,0l/2,0l-16V-Motor with 85/100 KW (115 /136 HP). The past row six cylinder engines were replaced through newly developed V6-Benzinmotoren. First there was the 2,5-Liter with 170 HP, in addition 3.0 litres with 211 HP in the top model the MV6. As Diesel there was first the 2.5 l turbo-Diesel (row six cylinder), bought to go with of BMW, later a 2,0l-16V with 73 KW (100 HP). The new V6-Motoren had in principle light alloy cylinder heads with four valves per cylinder. In addition the "“multi-RAM system"” came, which could vary the length of the sucking in way as a function of the engine speed in several stages, which particularly provided in the lower speed range for more torques. The compact and short design of the V6-Motoren made it suited also for the transverse installation in vehicles with front wheel drive. Accordingly at least the 2,5-l-V6 was offered also in the OPELs Vectra and Calibra.

To model year 2000 that received omega a larger Facelift. Both the front and the tail were arranged, also the interior was revised to a large extent again. Chrome borders were void now mostly, but bumpers and lateral strips were painted in car color. There were new equipment lines, which escaped MV6. The noblest variant called itself now "“Executive"”. In their nearly everything was contained, which had to offer the surcharge list: Leather pad, electrically adjustable seats, xenon light, Tempomat, radio with CD change-over switch and telephone"… Surcharge requiring nearly only the sun roof and the metal IC lacquer finish were when this equipment. The Facelift models stood starting from October 1999 with the dealers.

2000 should be built "“overomega"” with a 5,7l-V8 with 230 KW (315 HP), it however few weeks before the planned introduction on the market were withdrawn, because alleged cooling problems were not to be gotten with the V8-Motor into the grasp. The Leichtmetall-V8 (LS1) should be used from the Corvette, which contrary to the Northstar-V8-Vierventilern blocked with the large Cadillacs over more capacity has, but only one central cam shaft and two valves per cylinder. On the American market that was offered to omega as "“smaller"” Cadillac Catera. Since he was likewise built at Ruesselsheim, he should profit from the good reputation of the "“larva in Germany"”. Outwardly the Cadillac differed from the OPEL mainly by another radiator grille as well as changed tail lamps, technically was practically identical it. With the Catera was used excluding the 3.0 and/or later the 3.2 litres of V6.

In the same year a 2,6l-132kW-Motor (180 HP) came, which replaced the 2,5-l-V6. One year later followed a 2,2l Diesel with 92 KW (125 HP). For all, which had waited in vain for more strongly motorized omega, OPEL 2001 pushed a 3,2l-160kW (218 HP) after, which replaced the 3,0-Liter and only was available with automatic transmission. The first Common Rail Diesel came back 2001 as bought to go with BMW engine as 2,5l-Sechszylinder with 100 KW (150 HP).

That omega is not no more built for May 2003. Thus one era went to end with OPELs, because that omega was the last OPEL in classical building method with front engine and rear propulsion. Its position was not taken however as planned by the OPEL Signum. The model study Insignia points a possible solution to the follow-up of the omega. If a daily an omega successor should be built, it will be after press reports no more notchback sedan. Further is not to be assumed this successor in Germany is built. An import from Australia does not seem impossible thereby.

In Australia (under the label name Holden) that is built omega in easily changed form also today still with V6 and V8-Motoren. There it is called however not omega, but depending upon equipment Commodore, Berlina or Calais. Apart from sedan and combination also still further Karosserie-Varianten are offered: As sedan with extended wheel base (Statesman/Caprice), as all wheel area combination (Adventra), as two and four-door Pickup (Ute/Crewman) and as two-door Monaro. The Monaro is driven out in easily modified form in America as Pontiac GTO and in England under the name Vauxhall Monaro. The is exclusively available with V8-Motor.
