1957 were introduced of OPEL a new model of the middle class as a successor of the OPEL Olympia record. With a fashionable body the new model found equipped to immediately large Zuspruch at the market. A new body with multicolored lacquer finishes and two-colored Stoffinterieurs decorated from now to the model.
Many details - under it in particular, the large "panorama" drawn around the corner - front and back windows, which became swung trim, bumpers and tail lamps copied by its US-American model Chevrolet Bel air. The completely again designed front axle with negative camber and wishbones of different lengths and the 3-Gang-Getriebe full-synchronized now as well as the two engine variants with 1,5 litres (45 HP) and 1.7 litres (55 HP) gave a revolutionary driving feeling to the OPEL.
The vehicle was as sedan to have starting from 1958 also as combination (caravan) or Schnellieferwagen. The Americans said: "It is A Car and A Van. ", a car and a delivery van. The caravan was very often bought by craftsmen, since it offered the optimal connection of private cars and company cars. It offered also an accordingly high additional load. That was also the reason, why only few of these combinations until today remained. It was at that time to drive with a craftsman car. Likewise there was a basic version Olympia. This model did not have lateral trim, many otherwise chromium-plated parts was painted, also during the interior equipment was saved. The Olympia was allowed as also the caravan and the delivery van not the signature "record" at the front fenders to be carried, but had with a "Olympia" to before-dear-take.
1958 came the first optical corrections. The inside mirror hung of the instrument panel to the cover and for the first time held in this series an electrical, two-stage windshield wiper introduction. (Until 1957 the windshield wiper was propelled still engine speed-dependently over a flexible wave on the engine.)
1959 were inserted new 1.5 a litre engine, which took now 50 HP out instead of past 45 HP (with the old Olympia record only 40 HP). This increase in output was essentially reached by changes at the distributor, cylinder head and the exhaust manifold. Otherwise the Vierzylinder-Maschinen were based on the everlasting Vorkriegskonstruktion of the OPEL of olympia engine of 1937.
There were further innovations 1958 with a four-door sedan and an OPEL 1200 than basic version. The 1200er had only 40 HP from 1,2 litres capacity, laterally instead of the large rocker only a narrow, easily bent trim installed, over this at the front fenders the signature "1200" was attached. The 1200 Olympia corresponded and replaced this far basis model described above by the equipment in approximately that. It should bridge above all the time up to the new "small OPEL", the OPEL cadet A and until 1962 was further-built. In last model year 1959/60 there was for the Olympia record P1 the Olymat-3-Gang-Halbautomatik von Fichtel & Sachs, a higher performance version 1.7 of the litre engine with 60 HP to the program was when desired taken up.
The Olympia record P1 was replaced 1960 from the record P2.
Starting from 1967 there was an OPEL Olympia A, which however contrary to the old OPELs Olympia P1 (without record signature) a savings version record did not represent, but one revalued variant of the OPEL cadet B.
