Otto Binswanger (* 14 October 1852 in "† 15 July 1929 in Kreuzlingen) was a Swiss psychiatrist and neurologist.

Otto Binswanger originated from an originally Bavarian family, from which several well-known psychiatrists came out. He was the son of Ludwig Binswanger the founder of the sanatorium Bellevue in the Swiss Kreuzlingen, and uncle of the founder of the existence analysis Ludwig Binswanger.

It studied Strasbourg and Zurich medicine in Heidelberg, where it followed the Corps Suevia Heidelberg. After its graduation in the year 1877 he worked first for nine months at his father Ludwig Binswanger. That followed assistant years in Vienna under Theodor Meynert and in Goettingen at the psychiatric hospital under Ludwig Meyer. Afterwards it worked on pathological Institut in Breslau to it at the beginning of of 1880 on the psychiatric and mental hospital of the in Berlin as an upper physician under Carl Westphal was appointed, where it habilitierte itself. After it had received the German license to practise medicine due to its extraordinarily scientific capability by decree, it got 30 hardly year old 1882 a call as a director of the national mental hospital and the place as ao a professor of the psychiatric university clinic in Jena. Finally it became 1891 ordentl. Professor for psychiatry appointed and led the psychiatric university clinic up to his retirement in the year 1919. In these 37 years it created itself an international reputation as important clinicians; to its suggestions also the development of its own child and youth psychiatry decreases/goes back.

Apart from its extensive activity it was during the 1. World war in the field hospital as well as consultants and advisors of the Thuringian Armeecorps actively.

Beside its far over 100 publications its-most important work is probably over the epilepsy, the Neurasthenieund the text book of the psychiatry published together with Ernst Siemerling as well as its work over hysteria.

Its name found entrance into the clinical nomenclature by the Binswanger illness described by it (disease Binswanger, Binswanger dementia, Subkortikale arteriosklerotische Enzephalopathie (SOW)), a form of the dementia, with which brain damage is caused by arterial blood high pressure of many years (hypertonus) and Arteriosklerose.

In addition Binswanger was selected already in April 1911 to the pro rector that university Jena and finally received the title of a Medizinalrates and that of the secret Medizinalrates.

Binswanger was not however only a large scientist but also a highly gifted teacher and physician, who enjoyed an international reputation. One of its completely considerable patients was Friedrich Nietz as well as a member of the Russian Zarenhauses.Binswanger dared themselves however also into not-medical ranges like the national economy, like among other things its commitment as a member of the supervisory board (since 1918) of the Saxonian-Thuringian Portland Cement factory & CO. Kg a.A. in proves. It kept this mandate up to its death.
