The paper Mark was during the inflation years 1919 to 1923 official currency of the Weimar Republic. It was replaced 1923 by the pension Marks and afterwards 1924 by the realm Marks.

The term "„paper Marks "“was later introduced, in order to differentiate the inflation money from the adequate Goldmark to. During printing the paper Marks on even starting from 1 billion from space reasons and the overview because of no zeros were printed.

The designation developed, since by the inflation in Germany, galloping at the end, the money was extremely cancelled (a US Dollar cost up to 4.2 trillion Marks) and therefore cash notes at values of several 100Milliarden or trillion Marks long time the only valid currency were; coining/shaping from always new coins would too expensively have come the state. Parallel to the billion and trillion-paper Mark evaluation stages however from summer to autumn temporarily 1923 by the expenditure by so-called "“emergency money of stable value"” were tried, which should be based on (fictitious) a gold dollar covering basis, to stabilize the currency. These notes (treasury bonds, which promised partial Aufgeld from 70% to 1935) had then in tying to the old Goldmark in connection with the US Dollar the e.g. following print:

1/2 dollar = 2, 20 Marks of gold

Many regional administrative bodies publication apart from the realm administration of debts likewise similar emergency money on gold Mark dollar basis, which referred to treasury bonds. Deser stabilization attempt did not succeed however so correctly! Only as the course in November 1923 exactly 4.2 trillion paper Marks = 1 US Dollar was, succeeded stabilization then on basis the new pension Mark, which was formally then "“an old Goldmark"”. See Hjalmar pit.

Then parallel the new pension Mark lights with date of issue 01.11.1923 to the course of 1 Billon paper Marks = 1 rotated beginning of 1924 pension Mark parallel with the old billion and trillion-values to the old paper Mark. The last paper trillion-values still date on March 1924!

Since the trillion-values in the process of the yearly 1924 were exchanged nearly completely into the new pension Mark lights, they are today very rare and obtain therefore high collecting tank values, what one cannot say of the cancelled more more million and smaller billion-lights usually.

On the international foreign exchange markets Germany had 1924 nevertheless still some difficulties the new and/or old (Vorkriegs) foreign exchange rate of 4,20 RM = 1 US-$ to hold"… also gave it in the spring still substantial price jumps in the consumer index. The old, low consumer price index from the spring 1914 could be achieved however with the new more more pension and later realm Marks never more again.
