With the term Parroquia (literal translation into German: Pfarrbezirk, Kirchspiel, church municipality) are designated in the Spanish autonomous regions Asturien and Galicien administrative units, which areas below the district level (Spanish municipio, in Asturien and Galicien concejo) to arrange. Traditionally as a rule a church municipality formed the center of a "Parroquia".
Also in Ecuador administrative units are designated in such a way below canton, which are connected not with church organisational structures and do not carry usually also the designation of parish churches. Most have lay names. In the context of the decentralization of the Ecuadorian state the citizens of each Parroquia select every four years with the local elections a junta parroquial (Kirchspielversammlung), which has certain authority with the regulation of the public life locally. Urban and rural Kirchspiele is distinctive too, whereby first are part of a Municipio, with respect to which beside juntas the parroquiales also a superordinate town councillor (concejo municipal) and a mayor is selected.
