Paul Gerson Unna (* 8 September 1850 in Hamburg; "† 29 January 1929 in Hamburg) was a physician and dermatologist.

The son Hamburg physician of the Moritz Adolph Unna began a medicine study in Heidelberg, interrupted it however, in order to fight in the war between France and Prussia, where it was heavily wounded. it took its study to 1871 in Heidelberg, went later to Leipzig and finally attained a doctorate with Anatol Waldeyer in Strasbourg. Its doctor work for the Histologie and history of the development of the epidermis (archives for microscopic anatomy, 1876) contained a set of new ideas and aspects, which partly encountered hard criticism, so that them were only accepted after some corrections 1875.

It received its dermatologische training in Vienna, where it co-operated among other things with Ferdinand of Herba, Moritz Kaposi and Heinrich Auspitz.

After its return to Hamburg he worked first in practice its father, then in the hospital sank George. Unnas principal interest applied for the skin. It already opened a practice for skin diseases in Hamburg to 1881; it opened a private skin hospital in Hamburg which it called Dermatologikum and in which it on its special field concentrate completely could to 1884. Its 1884 published book "“Histopathologie of the skin diseases"” combined the entire knowledge at that time into skin diseases and made it one of the prominent dermatologists of its time. It described skin diseases and developed new therapies. Among its innovations ranks the use of Ichthyol and Resorcin against skin diseases (starting from 1886).

Unna investigated the biochemical processes of the skin and described as the first the Stratum granulosum. 1894 it introduced the layer projection as a method of the skin investigation.

1907 lent that Hamburg senate the title of a professor to it, 1908 became it a Chefarzt at the hospital Eppendorf. Only 1919 he became also a professor of the University of Hamburg, and received the first chair for Dermatologie.

1927 it described the Unna illness for the first time.

He co-operated closely with the pharmacist Paul Carl Beiersdorf Co.

In Hamburg the Unnastrasse carries for its names, in which the Beiersdorf Co. AG has its company center.
