The period of instruction is the training period, during which it is active as a candidate (simple, which can be done from an official to the preparation for its later office after the appropriate career regulation, middle and elevated service) and/or as a junior lawyer (higher service). Periods of instruction are intended for all groups of careers and lock, out of in the simple service with a career examination.

"§ 14 exp. 2 and exp. 5 of the official right framework law (BRRG) specifies the minimum times:

• elevated service: 3 years, if no study is demanded, with demanded study it is shortened. With district notaries the period of instruction can be longer.
• higher service: The duration can vary 2 years, in careers of special field or be omitted completely.

Even if a period of instruction serves the preparation on another occupation than the official career, then it can be out-arranged as special public training relationship with smaller purchases and without award of the official status, "§ 14 exp. 1 BRRG. From cost reasons almost all Lands of the Federal Republic converted the Rechtsreferendariat into such a training relationship.

Periods of instruction for the careers of the higher service

In the group of careers of the higher service the periods of instruction carry usually the designation "“Referendariat"” and take two years, except with special fields.
