Dr. Peter Piot (* 1949 in lions/Belgium) is of the United Nations and acting director of the organization UNAIDS.
Dr. Piot attained 1974 the medical doctor title at the University of Gent and was 1976 with discoverers of the Ebolavirus in Zaire. 1978/79 he was leading scientist for infections at the university of Washington in Seattle/USA. it graduated to 1980 as a doctor of the microbiology at the university of Antwerp/Belgium and was there following until 1992 boss of the department for infections and immunity at Institut for tropical medicine.
Into the 1980ern started and extended different joint projects against AIDS in Africa: in Burundi, d'Ivoire, Kenya, Tanzania as well as the project SIDA in Kinshasa/Zaire, which was the first international HIV/AIDS project in developing countries.
1986/87 he was an extraordinary professor at the university of Nairobi, and from 1988 to 1992 likewise extraordinary professor for public health at the free university of Brussels.
From 1991 to 1994 Dr. Piot was a president of international AIDS society. 1992 he became a deputy director of the global program against AIDS (English: Global programs on AIDS) of the World Health Organization (WHO).
On 12 December 1994 it was appointed as the of the UN and as the first acting director Joint of the United nation programs on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS).
1995 struck king Albert IITH from Belgium Piot to the knight, with the title "baron". It is member of the medical institute that national Academy OF Science of the United States, the Royal Academy OF Medicine in Belgium and the Royal college OF Physicians in London.
Dr. Peter Piot is an author of 15 books and over 500 scientific articles. It received numerous honors for scientific and social achievements.
