The pin (of old high German: steft prick, thorn; - >steif, something small, inferior) is a writing and a drawing equipment.
Pins probably belonged to the first tools, which humans used. The oldest proofs originate already from the Steinzeit, in which with simple wood sticks cutting into clay/tone were made, which are often to be found together with cave painting.
With the arising of the early advanced cultures the write pipe stepped into the place of the write stick (calamus). This was replaced in the process of the time by brushes and pens, which were considered as more elegant and in addition also were usable on paper, while the pins at that time were used only as a scribing tool witness. In the late antique one used only few rune and cuneiform scripts as well as sculptor Stifte.
In the Middle Ages one used pins from lead, silver or tin, which drew however only a very thin and pale line. In the late Middle Ages one finally began to manufacture modern pencils in form of a wood with set in piece of lead.
Starting from that 16. Century was replaced the lead by graphite, which a stronger line produced and in addition better on paper was to be used, since one did not have as strongly prints as before.
