The pivot table (of franz. more pivoter = turn), also turning table mentioned, is a special kind of table for the clear representation of complex volume of data. It serves for to the announcement, unification, evaluation and filtering of data from other tables.
Lines and columns in a pivot table can be turned and changed over and positioned at will, in order to make different representations and analysis opinions possible of the data. The original data are not changed.
Data sources for pivot tables can be lists and data bases from spread-sheet analyses, in addition, tables from external applications of data bases, e.g. within a Office package. In the usual Office packages an assistant (pivot table assistant or data pilot) helps with the production of pivot tables.
For the improvement of the overview with large data sets the possibility of the production of a pivot diagram exists with some Office packages.
