In the German Federal Armed Forces platoon leader does not mean a utility position, a rank. The platoon leader is subunit leader and leads a course. A course covers, dependent on the respective branch of service, as a rule between 20 and 40 soldiers. A course consists several courses of several groups, educates a company, a battery or a relay. The rank of the platoon leader usually is at the army some the younger (subalternen) officer (second lieutenant or first lieutenant or an experienced NCO with Portepee (technical sergeant or main sergeant), in exceptional cases also an officer candidate. At navy and Air Force (flying relay) also main people or staff officers (major) are platoon leaders, there the majority of the pilots officers (second lieutenant, first lieutenant, captain) often are.
In Swiss army a function and no military degree are meant with platoon leader. Usually a course is led by a second lieutenant or a first lieutenant. In exceptional cases it can be also a platoon leader deputy (Zfhr Stv) e.g. in the rank of an upper being awake master. Logistics courses are led in new Swiss army by so-called logistics platoon leader (log Zfhr) in the rank of an aide NCO.
