The term Podologie originates from the Greek one (podos = gr. Foot) and describes the not-medical medicine at the foot. The legal regulations, which fix the career profile and the training as the "“medical foot nurse"” and/or as the "“medical foot male nurse"”, are regulated in the Podologengesetz (PodG) and the training and test regulation (PodAPrV). The career profile is the youngest in the group federallegally of the health specialized occupations regulated according to kind 74 No. 19 GG. Since 2002 the job title "“Podologe/Podologin"” is legally protected and since 2003 the job title "“medical foot nurse/medical foot male nurse"”. Only the persons may call themselves in such a way, who are in the possession of a national permission document for the guidance of the job title.

The measures of a Podologen are various and lie on the area of the Dermatologie and of the foot. They cover preventive and kurative therapeutic measures approximately around the foot, from the ranges Diabetologie, surgery, Dermatologie etc.

Podologen co-operate as independent Leistungserbringer in own Podologiepraxen with or without cash permission, as free coworkers in practice community or as employees in hospitals or special foot outpatient clinics with other occupational groups, like for example physicians, shoemakers or Physiotherapeuten, Ergotherapeuten etc.
